Description
Makita Rotary hammer
Makita Rotary hammer is a heavy-duty drilling and chiseling tool designed for masonry, concrete, brick, tile, and similar hard materials. It uses a special mechanism (electro-pneumatic) to deliver hammering force while rotating the bit. Many models allow three modes:
-
Rotation only (normal drilling)
-
Hammer + rotation (drilling into hard material)
-
Hammer only (chipping)
Makita makes both corded and cordless versions. The tool is built for robustness, handling tougher jobs than a standard hammer drill.
 Key Features & Specs
Here are important features you’ll find on Makita rotary hammers, using some real model examples:
-
Power & Motor Input
  • 470 W to ~1010 W in corded models depending on size. -
Impact Energy (the hammering force)
  • Ranges from ~1.4 Joules up to ~8 Joules for larger cordless/corded models. -
Drilling Capacities
  • Concrete: ~18 mm to ~35 mm (corded SDS-Plus/Max) depending on model.Â
  • Steel & Wood also supported (smaller diameters), e.g. ~13 mm in steel, ~32 mm in wood for many models -
Modes of Operation
  • Rotation only (for drilling wood, steel)
  • Hammer + rotation (for masonry)
  • Hammer only / chiselling (for demolition or removal of tiles etc.) in many models. -
SDS Chucks
  • SDS-Plus or SDS-Max depending on power class — allows quick bit changes and better bit mounting for heavy/impact loads -
Anti-Vibration / Ergonomics
  • Many models include AVT (Anti-Vibration Technology) or other vibration-damping technology to reduce fatigue.Â
  • Comfortable handles (side handles, rubber grip), mode switch placements that are durable. -
Speed & Impact Rate
  • No-load RPMs typically in the 0-1000 / 0-1200 / up to ~2,100 rpm depending on model.Â
  • Impacts per minute (hammering strokes) often in thousands (e.g. 4,000-5,000 ipm etc.). -
Weight & Size
  • Weight varies (corded versions are heavier, cordless ones lighter but still substantial). Example: ~2.3-3.2 kg in some corded models
  • Physical dimensions suited to handling; often with side handle and depth stop. -
Durability & Safety
  • Built for tough site conditions: strong housing, thermal protection, overload protection.
  • Reverse / forward switches in many models
