Description
A “3-pin” industrial plug generally refers to a plug with two live/power pins + earth (ground) (sometimes 3 phase + earth) used for heavier duty or industrial machinery rather than domestic appliances.
For example, the standard IEC 60309 (also called CEE or “pin & sleeve” connectors) covers a wide range of industrial plugs and sockets for higher voltages/currents.
Important features:
-
Rated current (e.g., 16 A, 32 A) and rated voltage (e.g., 220-250 V for single-phase, or higher for three-phase).
-
Protection / Ingress rating (e.g., IP44, IP67) meaning splash proof or waterproof.
-
The appropriate number of poles (pins) for the supply you have (single phase vs three phase) & earth.
-
Colour-coding/keying in IEC60309 style so you don’t mismatch voltage or phases
